Governor Cecil Andrus of Idaho, who fought to keep Idaho from becoming a permanent nuclear waste dump and to clean up the nuclear waste mess in Idaho just passed away. The Idaho Statesman published the following extensive review of his life and work. This work revealed the outrageous and reckless behavior of the Department of Energy management of the nuclear waste (or not so depleted Nuclear material) accumulated from navy reactors and then later from all sources around the nation threatening the water quality in one of the largest fresh water aquifers in the US. The United States continues to produce this eternally dangerous “waste” for use in Naval operations, for power generation and nuclear warheads but has totally insufficient funds dedicated to the management of the nuclear materials after the production processes and the actual use of nuclear fuel rods. This keeps the cost of nuclear fuel low (by eliminating any dedication of the profit made from the energy produced to this management). It just lets the planet and the public bear the ultimate price by keeping it all out of site, out of mind, but not out of the environment. Nuclear reactions are best kept where the “creator” set them. 93 million miles away on the sun.
