Learn the Lingo. Under the Obama Administration a program was set in motion to “Modernize the Nuclear Weapons (and Delivery systems)” with a projected cost of $1.2 Trillion US over 30 years. This was and continues to be counter to the commitments the US made in the NPT treaty to work with other Nuclear Armed States to reduce and eliminate their Nuclear Weapons. All Nuclear Weapons States were signatories of this NPT. (Even before the end of the Cold War the US and USSR began to make serious agreements leading to a great reduction in the number of live Nukes on the Planet.

The UN currently has open for signatures and state ratification a Treaty TPNW which makes the creation, possession and use or threat of use of Nuclear Weapons against international law. All the Nuclear Weapons States opposed this treaty along with states under their “Umbrella”. Apparently there is a preference among these states for a new nuclear arms race and the balance of power politics and balance of terror for human kind while pouring national wealth into creating weapons jobs and military might rather than into the welfare and happiness of their citizens and the rest of the world. This competitive model supported and intensified by TRUMP’s MAGA mania and the PNAC (Project for a New American Century) zealots such as John Bolton, Mike Pompeo and a host of others including US Space Command blind us to necessity for all human societies to work together radically and immediately to save the Planet from ourselves.

One wild card in all this is that Israel–not a Nuclear Weapons State at the time–has never been a part of the NPT and has since developed an unacknowledged arsenal of weapons estimated at 80 to 200 bombs capable of delivery throughout the Middle East (at least). They have been one of the strongest opponents of the NPT except where it applies to Iraq and Iran. Any analysis of the forces that oppose the TPNW as a way forward as well as the reasons for the US withdrawing from the NPT must include Israel’s influence over US policy and politics.
