Benjamin Tells Colorado Springs Audience That Ceasefire Talks Are Long Overdue

Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK, was in Colorado Springs on April 5, 2023, as part of her travels promoting her new book:  Making Sense of a Senseless Conflict.   She was at the Chinook Center and, due to the small number in attendance, there was a friendly informal atmosphere.  Benjamin spoke briefly and then showed a video she described as a summary of her book.  The video is available at codepink.org.  Clicking on “Peace in Ukraine” will give access to the 18-minute video, well worth the time whether one would agree with her analysis of the “senseless war” or not.

The video describes in some detail the steps taken by the U.S. and NATO in their relations with Ukraine (and other former Soviet states) since the breakup of the Soviet Union.  These facts are generally missing from the narrative we hear about the war in Ukraine which is described as beginning with the “unprovoked” attack by Russia in February, 2022.  Benjamin and Code Pink condemn the Russian attack and invasion as illegal but provide fuller context to the relations between the “west” and Russia.  Their position now is there must be a ceasefire and the killing must stop.

After the film, there was an informative give and take discussion about the war and the position of the adversaries.  The efforts for a ceasefire were discussed and how Ukraine was discouraged by the U.S. and the United Kingdom from completing peace negotiations with Russia in March, 2022.  Benjamin repeatedly emphasized the need for working for and advocating for U.S. engagement with efforts for a ceasefire and to stop the killing.

Call Sen. Hickenlooper (303-244-1628) and Sen. Michael Bennet (303-455-7600).  Even call local Rep. Doug Lamborn (719-520-0055). Our representatives do keep track of calls from constituents.  Tell them the U.S. needs to change its position to favor negotiations.  (Also, we need the money here in our country more than Ukraine does.)

View the eighteen minute video and urge US to end its encouragement of Ukraine to continue to resist negotiations!!  Nuclear War could be on the way.

Viewing Trinity Test July 16,1945: "Now we are all Sons of Bitches"

Kenneth BainbridgeDeputy Director Manhatten Project

“Everything I did at Kings Bay was a result of my faith and my commitment to challenge the idols whose only purpose is to destroy human life on an unimaginable scale. I went to Kings Bay to use my body to refuse to bow down to these idols. I went to try to bring attention to the idolatry that it is requiring of our nation and its people. I went in a spirit of prayer and repentance. I went in hope that this witness might invite other people to reflect on the obscenity and on the idolatry that it is before God.”

Liz McAlisterKings Bay Protestor 2019

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending he sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children...This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron." --spoken to the American Society of Newspaper Editors 1953

Dwight EisenhowerUS President 1953-1961

We are prone to self-righteousness if we call ourselves peacemakers, and yet do not perceive how the peace issue cuts through all the economic and social issues that we often try to keep separate. If the race for nuclear arms is encouraged by our fear of losing the affluent ways of life that we have taken for granted, then we must see how our fears and desires have left so many other human beings naked and hungry.

Malsolm Warford"The Church's Role in a Nuclear Age

A world free of the threat of nuclear weapons is necessarily a world devoid of nuclear weapons…. Nuclear weapons pose an intolerable threat to humanity and our habitat…. Others subscribe to Churchill’s assertion ‘Peace is the sturdy child of terror.’ For me, such a peace is a wretched offspring, a peace that condemns us to live under a dark cloud of perpetual anxiety, a peace that codifies mankind’s most murderous instincts….The beast must be chained, its soul expunged, its lair laid waste.
