Opinion piece by Thomas P. Grumbly, who served as assistant secretary
for environmental management at the Department of Energy, and as
undersecretary of Energy, from 1993-1997.
Rocky Flats is NOT a “clear success,” nor is it “closed for good.”
He hints that WIPP had a “full, safe cleanup due to the use of citizen
advisory panels.” It didn’t.
What is he referring to when he states, “keeping the public guessing
about the results of a mediation effort designed to break the Hanford
deadlock on cleanup, but promise to tell all shortly?”
He is right that ” It does no good to keep this unfinished legacy in the
dark,” and I do like the title, except that he left out any mention of
downwinders.
